A major step forward for the cashew nut sector in Senegal

Thursday, March 6, 2025 will be a milestone date for the cashew nut sector in Senegal with the official creation of the Federation of Actors of the Cashew Value Chain of Senegal (FACVAS). Resulting from the merger of two large cooperative unions, the Union du Centre (UCACVA-SS) bringing together 17 cooperatives and the Union du Sud (UC2S) with 7 cooperatives, this federation complies with OHADA law. The constituent general assembly, held in Sédhiou, brought together various key players in the sector.

A clear objective for the development of the sector

The FACVAS initiative is part of the efforts of the USDA  LIFFT-CASHEW program, which supports producer organizations. The NGO Shelter For Life (SFL), through its “Access to Market” component, played a crucial role in setting up this structure, whose main objectives are:

  • The adoption and validation of the statutes and internal rules in accordance with OHADA law.
  • The election of the members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board.
  • Developing an action plan for the federation.
  • Strengthening the relationship between the two unions to ensure the strength and sustainability of the federation in the cashew nut value chain.

A high-level meeting

The creation of FACVAS brought together several key stakeholders in the cashew nut sector. Took part in this event:

  • SFL Access to Market staff,
  • Industry coaches and experts,
  • The supervisory authorities,
  • Representatives of the two LIFFT-Cashew partner cooperative unions (UCACVA-SS and UC2S).

A total of 17 participants contributed to the establishment of this structuring federation for cashew in Senegal.

Promising prospects for cashew producers

With over 6,000 members producing cashew, FACVAS becomes a major representation structure. Its potential is considerable both in terms of production and planted area.

The General Assembly allowed for the finalization of a three-year strategic development plan, which will guide the actions of the federation. FACVAS intends to play a central role in discussions with state authorities and partners to defend the interests of producers.

This structuring marks a turning point in the organization of the cashew nut sector, paving the way for sustainable development and better valuation of the sector in Senegal.
